Of course: a clean workplace is pleasing to the eye. But this also increases the productivity of employees. “People perform better in a tidy environment,” says commercial director Alissa Metternich. In this blog she explains exactly how that works.
No, this is not a slick marketing pitch to sell more cleaning products. It's pure science! Research by the Cleaning Research Association (VSR) has shown that our productivity increases by up to 12 percent in a clean workplace. Without clutter and dirt around us, we can concentrate better. So we can do a lot of (extra) cleaning for this.
Spring cleaning
A clean desk policy is therefore not only intended for the eye. Employees simply get more done in a clean, tidy workplace. “We also notice that at Spectro,” says Alissa. “Cleaning of the factory has been made part of our daily work. We also have a clean desk policy at the office and in the last week of the year we always have a major ‘spring cleaning’ where we recycle everything that can be disposed of. That way we can literally and figuratively make a fresh start in the new year. That gives such a nice feeling! A filthy workplace actually evokes resistance. For some employees, it even causes stress and dreariness.”

The pandemic has made many entrepreneurs more aware of the importance of hygiene. “Companies that have their hygiene in order often have lower absenteeism rates,” says Alissa. “Because of corona, sales of our disinfectants such as Ethades increased enormously. But there was temporarily less demand for the standard cleaning agents. Unjustly so, because a clean workplace is just as important as clean hands.”
