Blog: Are your cleaning products biodegradable?

Many customers ask us this question. Our answer? Of course they are biodegradable, because that complete biodegradability is a legal requirement. Therefore, our cleaning products do not differ from those of others in this respect. How do they do that? Account manager Suzanne explains this in this blog post.

Suzanne immediately gets to work. “Our cleaning products are interesting for several reasons. Of course they are biodegradable, because that is a legal requirement. But we like to go one step further than that. Professional cleaning products nowadays have to do much more and can then ‘just’ clean well.

Surface-active substances

First, let’s go back to that biodegradability (which is legally required). One of the most important ingredients in a cleaning product are the surfactants, says Suzanne. “These are what remove the dirt and hold it in the solution. All surfactants used in Europe must meet the biodegradability requirements as defined in the European Detergents Regulation. This ensures that after the degradation process, only the natural building blocks remain, such as water, carbon dioxide and mineral salts.”

“After the demolition process, the natural building blocks remain”

Unethical (and prohibited)

Although our competitors sometimes claim that biodegradable cleaning products are unique, that is not the case at all. In fact, it is unethical (and even prohibited) to claim that property as an added value, especially to avoid misleading consumers. And that is not what we do at Spectro either.

We actually do this

How do we differentiate ourselves when it comes to sustainable cleaning products? Suzanne: “Anyone who knows our company a little bit knows that we go to great lengths to ensure maximum hygiene, a low footprint, and a good environment. Our Ecodos line This is perhaps the best example of this. We offer the products in a packaging that is entirely made of recycled plastic and has a smart dosing system. This means that you never use too much of the product. Furthermore, we produce energy-neutral products and most of our products are certified with the European Ecolabel and the ASP.”
